“The Sixth Power” – Montreal’s Independent Media Demands Freedom of the Press

After several months of planning and development, 99% Media has today unveiled an initiative aimed at improving the state of freedom of the press for independent, alternative, student and citizen media in Montreal.

All too often, journalists who do not fall under the banner of “mainstream” or “professional” are denied access, detained, or made the target of violent actions by the police while trying to cover events. This is especially true of protests in the streets of Montreal.

As part of this project, members of Montreal’s independent press have organized a meeting with the SPVM this coming Monday at their downtown headquarters. Also present will be representatives from the Canadian Association of Journalists, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and l’Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec.

A press conference is scheduled to take place after the meeting, 10:30 am at Place Des Arts (corner of St Urbain and St. Catherine).
